Richard Keen: Two if By Sea

“Two if By Sea” is both a reflection back on what is now my 25 th year as an artist living and working in Maine, and an open conversation as I continue to make sense of this space and my place within it. Much of my time here has been spent on, or under, the water as a commercial diver - or out hiking the trails and woods with my dogs in my free time. It is impossible to spend time in Maine without being changed, or shaped, by the land forms and seascapes around us. Everywhere you look there are mesmerizing shapes, angles and voids. In this show, six of my earlier works return, serving as catalysts for new translations of our environment, while also forming a new throughline of comprehension between these works and my other bodies of work – which on the surface sometimes appear to be much more different than they actually are.
