Nathaniel & Matthew Meyer: Family Resemblance
Matthew and Nathaniel Meyer received their first formal training from their father, Louis A. Meyer, a Maine-based painter and novelist. Over the years, the brothers have shared several studios in the Portland area, and have logged countless hours outside painting plein air landscapes together, both in the Portland area, and in their family home of Corea, Maine. In 2015, they were awarded a HewnOaks Artist Residency where they painted collaborative plein air landscapes- needless to say, it made for some good fights. Although their works have diverged stylistically in recent years, their work still shares a common core of painterly realism forged through decades of painting in and out of doors together. Built on the bedrock of their father’s early instruction, their paintings, while easily distinguishable, still bear a strong family resemblance.
Ranging from expressionist to romantic and from bravura to refined, their recent work will be displayed together for the first time in many years at the Elizabeth Moss Gallery from April 29th to June 4th. Entitled “Family Resemblance”, the opening reception will be on April 29th, and both artists will be present to welcome guests and answer questions.
