New Work by Maine Artist Frances Hynes on view at Moss Galleries
New York-based artist Frances Hynes has long been captivated by the Maine coast. Frances Hynes: Nocturnes & Memories features 18 new paintings of ethereal landscapes, seascapes, and memories of the night sea. The exhibition is on view through January 29 at Moss Galleries in Falmouth, Maine.
“I have long been fascinated with the night sky and how the night hours affect the way we see: forms becoming simplified and silhouetted,” said artist Frances Hynes. “I view the night as a quiet, restorative, meditative time. Another interest is memory, looking back in time, and working on a single painting over a span of time. My paintings project many facets and I invite the viewer to reflect upon my work and form their own reveries and narrative.”
Hynes has been influenced by the great artists who preceded her specifically Van Gogh. In her painting, Plowing, Rolling Acres, the silhouette of a man plowing a field with a horse comes from a painting by Van Gogh and in Starry Night and Village, viewers may recall a reference to Van Gogh’s much loved painting Starry Night. In these paintings, Hynes is projecting reassuring images of a certain way of life.
Frances Hynes has been traveling and visiting Maine since the 1970s. Beginning in 1975, she painted on Monhegan Island, and more recently, some of her favorite locations to paint en plein air include Popham, Georgetown, Pemaquid, Stonington, Lubec, and Port Clyde, Maine.
Hynes lives in Queens, New York, and her studio during quarantine was recently featured in Hyperallergic. She was a founding member of Independent Studios I, a group of artists that maintained a cooperative workspace for 38 ½ years from 1978 until 2016 in Long Island City, New York. Hynes received a MA from New York University and a BA from St. John’s University. At New York University, she performed in Outskirts, a happening choreographed by Robert Rauschenberg. The artist also studied at the Art Students League in Woodstock, New York and the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy.
Hynes has had more than 40 one-person exhibitions. Her paintings are represented in numerous museum collections including: the Albany Institute of History and Art, NY; The Brooklyn Museum, NY; Bates College Museum of Art, Lewiston, ME; Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville, ME; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC; Portland Museum of Art, ME; Newark Museum, NJ; Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum, CT; New Britain Museum of American Art, CT; Springfield Museum of Art, OH; Telfair Museum of Art, Savannah, GA; and the Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers, New Brunswick, NJ. Corporate collections include: AT&T, Alliance Capitol Management and Ariel Capitol Management among others. In 1984, a commission was completed for Bellevue Hospital in New York.
