NEW WORK BY MAINE ARTIST CHARLIE HEWITT AT THE NEW MOSS GALLERIES IN PORTLAND

January 7, 2022

(Portland, Maine) Charlie Hewitt: Bush of Ghosts opens on January 14 at the new Moss Galleries on Portland’s Eastern Waterfront at 100 Fore Street. Featuring nine new paintings and one marquee sign by the artist, Charlie Hewitt: Bush of Ghosts will be on view through February 28.

“I am deeply drawn to Charlie Hewitt’s artworks as well as the person he is," said Gallery Owner Elizabeth Moss. "His new paintings are a visual representation of the struggle between light vs. dark, good vs. evil, and courage vs. cowardice. In many ways, these works are diary of the last three years of the pandemic and political strife that has laid over our country like a wet blanket. I am deeply pleased to say that in most of the paintings light triumphs over dark. His paintings exude optimism as bright as the light of his marquee sign Hopeful."

Nationally known for his dynamic, imaginative paintings, sculpture, prints, and neon constructions, Charlie Hewitt splits his time between Portland, Maine, and Jersey City, New Jersey. Stylistically rooted in expressionism and surrealism, Hewitt’s art is both playful and serious, a quality he shares with artists Alexander Calder, Joan Miro, Paul Klee, and his mentor Philip Guston.

Lately, Hewitt has created public art, installing his "Urban Rattle" series of sculptures along the High Line in New York City, as well as in Portland and Lewiston, Maine. Most recently, he unveiled his "Hopeful" sign in Bangor, Lewiston, Brunswick, and Portland as well as other cities and states across the country. Charlie’s Hopeful has struck a chord and is spreading like wildfire across our democracy.

Hewitt’s imagery is largely influenced by the mill-working communities he grew up around in Lewiston, Maine. The energy and culture of these communities and the values of the church, family, and work have infused his artwork and are the foundation of his imagery and symbols. Hewitt’s work is represented in numerous collections, including those of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; New York Public Library, New York; Brooklyn Museum, New York; Library of Congress, Washington, DC; the Portland Museum of Art, Maine; and the Bates College Museum of Art.
